Pre-paring for Steampunk World’s Fair
2012 is the year that I made a resolution to try a cosmic array of different things. Mainly along the lines of stepping out of the comfort zone of strictly anime and comic book conventions. My first step: Steampunk World’s Fair.
So I am going to be honest, I am new to Steampunk. If your reading this and your not sure of what Steampunk is reference the picture below.
Most people upon seeing someone in a steampunk sort of style can some what grasp the concept. But I know for a fact that devout Steampunkers become quite irritated if you throw gears on something and call it Steampunk, because respectfully it is more than just that. So for a more detailed and better worded explanation click here or here.
Research: So something interesting I’ve found out about the subculture that is Steampunk, is that it has a lot of literary influence. Which I am big fan of. Some examples H.P. Lovecraft, Jules Verne, and H.G. Wells. On this note I am working my working my way through The Complete Works of H.P. Lovecraft, Jules Verne-”Le Tour du Monde en Quatre-Vingt Jours”, “Voyage au Centre de la Terre” (I am reading these in French because it pleases my multi-lingual nature to kill so many birds with one stone), and “Aurorarama” by Jean-Christophe Valtat(He going to be a guest at SPWF so I figured meh why not also the cover of his book had a polar bear. I love polar bears.)
Tickets: I got for this were the Level II: Gentleperson’s Gentleperson V.I.P. tickets because I feel like if you go to something like this it only makes sense to get the most out of it.
Preparing a Costume: SO.I cheated on my costume. I totally bought it, but!!! It is hand made and comes from New Orleans so it kinda counts right?Anyway here is what it looks like:
I took a Steampunk Burlesque route because I am on this Burlesque kick and my original plan of being a Steampunk Pilot ehhh kinda fell through for me.(Click here to see where I bought this)
Transportation: Driving my ass because its 2 hours away.
Other thoughts…..from what I can see so far this is really well put together from Absinthe tasting to musical and burlesque performers. It’s been quite sometime since I’ve been excited for a conventions schedule of events.Otakon has disappointed me the past two years…. Expect one more post from me before I go to SPWF

Are you still reading Aurorarama? I found it absolutely fascinating! It’s up there with some of my favorite Steampunk works (have you checked out Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “Challenger” stuff?)
I just started Aurorarama, so far I love it. Also now that I’m done school for the semester reading this book has become even better with my newly freed up metal real estate. I’m almost drunk on imagination lol I haven’t read any Sir Arthur Conan Doyle but I have seen the movie version of The Lost World if that counts for anything.
